If you Really Loved Me, then…

Do you ever find yourself in a love contest with your mate?

A girlfriend once asked me to do something for her. I don't recall what it was but I do remember saying that I really didn't want to, with a sense that the request would have been very inconvenient to me.

She then said, 'if you really loved me (her) then you'd do this for me (her). My immediate reply was, lets not get into a who-loves-who-the-most contest.
What do you mean by that, she asked? I said that I could have easily replied to her request by saying, if you really loved me, then you wouldn't have asked me to do this for you.

I then said that we could easily escalate into an argument over who-loves-who-the-most contest. I suggested we both back off and talk about her request and my response.

Did I really want a piece of this? Is this a part of the 'normal process' of a relationship?

What do you think?
